Locative Magazine

A Little Home for New Australian Writing

Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT US

Q: What do you publish?

Locative Magazine publishes short fiction and poetry from authors currently residing in Australia.

Q: Do you have a preferred style or genre?

Locative Magazine aims for an audience interested in literary fiction, but we will consider works within any genre as long as they will appeal to a primarily literary audience.

Q: Are content warnings provided?

Yes – we liaise with our authors to decide appropriate content warnings, which can be viewed at the top of each submission.

Q: What does Locative mean?

It’s a grammatical case which denotes place or setting. We chose the title because it’s a cool word, but also that our work is grounded in a local sense of place, and that we want to be a place where new writing can reside.

ABOUT SUBMISSIONS

Q: What are your submission periods?

Currently, Locative Magazine operates on a bi-yearly schedule, with submission periods open in December-January for a May issue, and June-July for a November issue. Outside of these periods, we unfortunately cannot accept submissions.

Q: Who are submissions open to?

All writers at any stage of their career, as long as you currently reside in Australia.

Q: Do you read submissions blind?

No, the author details and the stage of their writing journey will be taken into account. We do not believe that there is an objective way of measuring writing quality which would benefit from blind submissions. Even if there were an objective standard, we would not believe that only work on the top of that standard should be published.

Q: Do you provide feedback on submissions?

We are unable to offer detailed feedback on all submissions.

Q: Is there a submissions fee?

No, submissions are and will always be free.

Q: Are submissions paid?

Yes! Currently our rates are $75 AUD per published short fiction piece or nonfiction piece, and $25 AUD per published poem (up to three per issue).

Q: Where does the money come from?

Locative Magazine is run on a shoestring budget covered by generous donations from our supporters, and the remainder is covered out of pocket by the editorial team. We are proudly independent and intend on remaining so. Any future grant or sponsorship money will be disclosed.

Q: Do you use Submittable?

Unfortunately, no. Submissions are to be sent via the embedded form on our website.
